Youth Day in South Africa marks the anniversary of the Soweto uprising against Bantu education. Bantu education required the teaching of Afrikaans, the language of the white minority to the black majority during the Apartheid era in South Africa. June 16, 1976 the youth of Soweto rose up in rebellion against the mandate. Historians now believe this uprising was the beginning of the end of South African apartheid.
This is a national holiday in South Africa.
